SHUNIAH LODGE A.F. & A.M. NO 287 G.R.C.

Old Tymers Night

May 07, 2013

At the annual Old Tymer's Night, Shuniah Lodge honoured Bro. Arnott Whitney for his long service to the Lodge and recognized Bro. Walter Wanson's long service

Arnott Whitney was born November 16, 1931 in Newcastle New Brunswick, though he grew up in the family house on Oliver Road. Arnott had a passion for hockey and he knew that playing pro hockey would put food on the table. Arnott was drafted by the AHL in 1951 by the Boston Bruins Hockey Club. He later went on to play with the Hershey Bears, Victoria Cougars, Winnipeg Warriors and then retiring from pro hockey in 1957 with the Quebec Aces. While playing with the Hershey Bears, Amott shared accommodations with the one and only Don Cherry. They still remain good friends to this day. Arnott married his wife, Lorna Johnston, and on June 11 will be married for 59 years. They have three children, Debra, David and Donny. When their first child was born, Arnott left pro hockey and was hired on with the Ministry of Transportation and Communication in 1958 as a highway inspector. In 1959 Arnott received a promotion to Area inspector and two years later to Senior Inspector in charge of Vehicle Inspection and Investigations and then lastly to Regional Manager of Drivers and Vehicles for Northwestern Region. It would bring the family back to their hometown, Thunder Bay.

Throughout his carrier he served on many boards and committees:

  • Associate member on the Ontario Association of Chief of Police

  • Vice President and member of the board for the Harbour Youth Services Program

  • Director of the Port Arthur Junior Hockey League.

  • Member of the Transportation Committee for the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce

  • Member of the Industrial Advisory Committee for Confederation College of Applied Arts

  • Member of the Log Hauling Safety Monitoring Committee.

Arnott was initiated into Shuniah Lodge in 1959 where he has been active, especially visiting the other lodges in the district.
